Long-Term Camper Trailer Canvas Maintenance

Platinum Campers Long-Term Camper Trailer Canvas Maintenance Tips for Extending the Life of Your Trailer Learn More Keeping Your Camper Trailer Canvas in Top Condition: Tips and Tricks Congratulations on your decision to invest in a Platinum camper trailer! With proper care and maintenance, your new trailer will provide you with many years of enjoyable camping experiences. One of the most critical elements of your trailer is the canvas, which provides shelter and protection from the elements. To ensure that your canvas remains in excellent condition and has a long life, it’s essential to take the time to prepare and maintain it properly. In this article, we’ll provide you with some expert tips on how to maintain your canvas, so you can get the most out of your camping adventures. Seasoning your Canvas Seasoning your canvas is crucial for waterproofing your camper trailer tents. During the manufacturing process, the canvas is stitched together creating needle holes that can allow water to penetrate, making seasoning a necessary process. In short, to season your tent, set up your trailer on a sunny day in your backyard, complete with poles. Use a hose to thoroughly wet the tent, focusing on the seams, and then let it dry. Repeat this process three to four times, allowing the canvas to dry completely between each round. This will ensure your camper trailer is ready for any inclement weather. It’s important to note that the waterproofing agents are applied to the canvas during manufacture, making additional waterproofing products unnecessary and potentially harmful. Overusing these solutions can clog the material’s pores and lead to condensation build-up, reducing the canvas’s breathability. Repeating the seasoning process regularly and keeping the canvas clean and dry is key to maintaining its waterproofing and extending its lifespan. For more info on what you should do with your camper on day 1 – check out the article “Day 1 with your new camper trailer” After Trip Canvas Care Always make sure your canvas is dry before storing it away, but if you have to pack it up wet, set it up again when you get home to allow it to dry properly. Wash off any dirt, bird droppings, or sap that may have accumulated during the previous trip with a soft brush and lukewarm water. Leaves and vegetable matter can stain the canvas, and bird droppings should be treated as soon as possible because of their acidity. Avoid using detergents and soaps that damage the canvas and reduce waterproofness over time. A simple spray down with the hose is best to keep dust and dirt from becoming ingrained. While this simple method will remove the need for more severe cleaning, in most environments, thorough cleaning will still be required every two to three years. Reproofing with a purpose-specific product like Dynaproof, may be necessary after extensive cleaning, but sticking to a water-based solution will ensure the fabric pores don’t become blocked with petroleum or silicone-based compounds. Thoroughly wet down the camper trailer after the waterproofing product has fully dried to make sure water beads along all surfaces for a good, even job. Clean Mould ASAP Mould and mildew thrive on dirt, moisture, and decreased airflow, forming if you store your camper trailer in a damp place or pack it down wet. If you find mould or mildew, dab on a solution of nine parts water to one part vinegar and let the canvas dry completely before you remove any traces with a brush and vacuum cleaner. If this doesn’t do the trick, check out Canvas Magic – it really works! However, it takes away the waterproofing agents, so you will have to re-waterproof the canvas. Mould growth can degrade the canvas very quickly, and if it gets bad enough, your entire camper may be written off by insurance. Therefore, it’s essential to remove mould the moment it is discovered. Always be careful to not close your camper trailer with canvas hanging out. This not only damages the canvas, but also allows water to soak through your canvas into your camper!  Other tips for the Maximum Life from your canvas If your camper hasn’t been used in a while, before setting off on your next camping escapade, be sure to check the forecast to avoid any weather surprises. If rain is in the cards, it’s a good idea to season it once again. This will help the fibres and help them expand and contract, maximizing their waterproofness. (Note: this is only required if your camper has been stored for a long time) To ensure the longevity of your canvas fabric and camper trailer, proper maintenance is key. This includes checking for rips and brushing off dirt as part of your camp chores. Don’t forget to vacuum out and remove all food scraps and other “nesting” items like scraps of paper or packaging after every trip to avoid unwelcome ant trails or a rat’s nest. Keep in mind that hairspray, spray deodorant, and insect repellents can impair water repellence and cause staining, so avoid using them inside the tent or near the fabric. Also, never expose the canvas to petrol, solvents, or related fluids for the same reasons. To reduce the risk of wear and tear, develop a careful and methodical pack-up routine. Avoid jamming the fabric against the poles and getting pieces caught in the door jams that could result in tearing. With these tips and tricks, your canvas will last you a lifetime, ensuring many years of memorable, dry camping experiences. Happy trails! While maintenance may not be the most exciting part of camping, it’s a crucial aspect that will keep your Platinum Camper running smoothly for years to come. Keeping Your Platinum Camper Stable: Tips for Using & Maintaining Your Stabiliser Legs

Platinum Campers Keeping Your Platinum Camper Stable: Tips for Using & Maintaining Your Stabiliser Legs Best Practices for Using Stabiliser Legs Learn More How to use and maintain your stabiliser legs Keeping your Platinum Camper in tip-top shape is crucial for your next off-road adventure. While it may not be the most exciting task, taking care of your stabiliser legs can save you from potential issues down the road. In this article, we’ll walk you through how to use and maintain your stabiliser legs effectively. Stabiliser Leg Tool – This is a 19mm socket- simply wind until it hits the ground – then give it one more small quarter turn to take pressure. This is all – Do not over tighten your legs.  While it’s essential to keep your stabiliser legs happy, it’s also vital to remember what they’re designed to do. They’re not meant to lift the entire weight of your camper or caravan – no way! They’re here to stabilise your rig and keep it from rocking around. So, don’t get too ambitious and try to lift the whole camper or wheel off the ground. Those roll pins holding the gears in place are only about four or five millimetres in diameter, and that’s not enough to bear the whole weight of your rig. To avoid damaging your stabiliser legs, try to set up your camper on even ground and use chocks to prevent any forward or backward rocking that could cause those pins to bend. While a slightly uneven surface is generally not a problem, for very uneven ground, using levelling chocks can be helpful to avoid any issues with the stabiliser leg pins bending. Wind down the legs using your stabiliser leg tool, wind until the leg touches the ground, then give it just another small turn to take the pressure. Don’t over-tighten the legs on uneven ground. Over-winding the legs can cause the leverage to try and bend the pin, resulting in trouble getting your stabiliser leg out. Or worse – it will break the pins, and you will be unable to wind it back up when it comes time to head home.  Stabiliser Leg Maintenance Steps Step 1: Remove the Dust Cover! Grab your trusty screwdriver and unscrew the two screws holding down the dust cover. Then, pop off the black cap and expose the gears inside the little stabiliser leg. Wow, those gears are like a little machine all on their own! Step 2: Grease is the Word! Next, get a finger full of grease and apply it to the gears. Work that sticky goodness amongst the teeth, ensuring that there’s plenty in there. It’s like the stabiliser legs are getting a much-needed spa treatment!   Step 1 – Undo the screws on either side of the cap covering the gears on your stabiliser leg.  Step 2 – Pop the plastic cap off using a flat head screwdriver.  Step 3 – Inspect and then generously grease the gears inside your stabiliser leg.  While maintenance may not be the most exciting part of camping, it’s a crucial aspect that will keep your Platinum Camper running smoothly for years to come. The Ultimate Guide to Maximizing Your Camper Trailer’s 12V System with Anderson Plugs

Platinum Campers The Ultimate Guide to Maximizing Your Camper Trailer’s 12V System with Anderson Plugs Tips and Tricks for Effective Power Management Learn More How to get the most out of your Anderson Plugs. As more and more adventurers hit the open road with their 4WDs and camper trailers, the importance of a well-equipped electrical system cannot be overstated. From powering essential lighting and fridges to charging phones and cameras, the demands on a rig’s 12V system are greater than ever. That’s where Anderson plugs come in. Nowadays, they’re the go-to for many camper trailers’ 12V systems. But is simply having an Anderson plug enough to keep your system running smoothly while driving? Not quite. If you’re looking to make the most out of your 12V system, keep reading for our top tips on getting the most out of your Anderson plug and wiring. The Right Batteries: Before diving into Anderson plugs and wiring, it’s important to ensure you have the right battery setup. For camper trailers, deep cycle batteries are the way to go. These batteries are specifically designed to discharge to around 80%, allowing you to use the power you need for longer periods of time. Make sure to choose a battery rated in ampere hours (Ah) so you can calculate the amount of discharge time you have. Harnessing the Power of the Sun: Depending solely on your vehicle’s alternator to recharge your camper trailer’s battery via the Anderson plug can be challenging. But adding quality solar panels can help replenish your power usage when your rig is stationary. There are four types of solar panels available, including mobile fold-out panels or solar blankets and fixed panels for your trailer or vehicle. Connect your portable solar panels to your camper trailer’s Anderson plug to introduce them to your power mix. Just be sure to fit a regulator between the battery bank and the panels to avoid damaging the battery with overcharging. DC-DC Chargers: To take your 12V electrical system’s capabilities to the next level, install a DC-DC charger between the Anderson plug and your battery in your camper trailer. You should also consider installing a DC-DC charger under your fourbie’s bonnet if you have a second in-car battery installed. DC-DC chargers allow you to achieve close to 100% charging capacity to your auxiliary batteries, ensuring you have ample power when you need it most. Wiring Matters: When it comes to 12V wiring, bigger is better. While a 50A Anderson plug can handle a fair amount of power, if your electrical wire is too thin, the voltage will drop too low to charge the battery effectively. The wiring to the rear of your vehicle should be at least 6mm and no longer than 5-6 metres to minimize this voltage drop. With good quality Anderson plugs, you can maintain connections over even the roughest terrain. They’re also great replacements for common 12V cigarette lighter outlets that tend to “pop-out” over bumpy tracks, especially for high draw essentials like your fridge. At Platinum Campers, we understand that every adventure is unique, and we’re committed to helping you create unforgettable experiences. Whether you’re a seasoned explorer or a first-time adventurer, we offer a range of quality 12V electrical systems to suit your needs. Get in touch with us today to learn more about how we can help you make the most out of your camper trailer’s electrical system.
